Ready to step into a future in health? The Northeast Victoria Health Careers Forum is your chance to explore the exciting, real-world possibilities of a career in health and allied health.

Join us for a day of in-depth Health and Allied Health career exploration for senior students, with real health professionals working in a diverse range of careers in our region.

The forum includes a series of workshops and lab simulations led by health professionals, exhibits from health education providers and regional health employers, and a Q&A panel with tertiary health and medicine students.

There are four sessions throughout the day, each offering a different set of workshop options. You’ll have the opportunity to choose which sessions you’d like to attend based on your interests. Places are limited, so please note that your preferred session may reach capacity.

Aged Care Nursing

Alcohol & Other Drug Services

Working in the community-based AOD sector is an incredibly rewarding experience. People who work in the sector are highly valued and regarded and make a significant contribution to the lives of people affected by AOD use.
There is a wide range of occupations in the community-based AOD sector. Typical roles include AOD worker, counsellor, residential worker, needle and syringe program worker, peer worker, community development worker, health education officer, nurse, doctor, psychologist, occupational therapist and many more.

Allied Health Assistant

Allied health professionals provide essential care for people of all ages including children, older people, people with chronic illnesses or mental ill-health, and those experiencing disability.
Allied health professionals work with people to identify and assess issues, provide treatment, and support acquisition of skills, recovery and reablement. In many cases, allied health interventions can reduce or remove the need for medical interventions. The allied health sector is extremely diverse with significant variation across and within professions.

General Nursing (RN)

The fundamentals of nursing are to deliver direct patient care and act as an advocate and health educator for patients, families, and communities.
A registered nurse undertakes a minimum of 3 years of study at a Bachelor level of Nursing and then obtains a licence to practise as a registered nurse.
National standards give an RN more autonomy in their practice decisions than other nurses.

Health Promotion involves tailoring programs using exercise and lifestyle to reduce illness and disease while also analysing current health trends. You will have the opportunity to work in rehabilitation centres, public health and community organisations.

This is a first-hand experience walking attendees through how a medical team approaches the treatment of injuries in an emergency response department.

Medicine

A career in general practice gives you the opportunity for a diverse experience in practising medicine. GPs are the first point of contact for patients and will coordinate your healthcare throughout your life. As a GP you can work independently anywhere in Australia.

Mental Health Behaviours

A mental health nurse works with and supports people to manage their mental health and any associated symptoms of mental illness.
Mental health nurses provide care for people of all ages, from adolescents to adults and older people. Mental health nurses can work in a variety of settings such as inpatient wards, community teams, rehabilitation facilities, forensic settings and private hospitals.
Importantly, mental health nurses offer their time and presence, and are there to listen and to assist people in their journey with recovery.

Midwifery

A midwife is a health science professional and registered nurse who deals with pregnancy, birth and post-birth with women. They also assist with reproductive health of women throughout their lives.

Nursing (EN)

Enrolled Nurses (EN) provide nursing care to patients in a variety of health, aged care, welfare and community settings under the supervision of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner or midwife.
An Enrolled Nurse undertakes at least 2 years of study at Diploma level.

Nutrition

A nutritionist is a person who provides advice on matters relating to food and how it impacts on health. Nutritionists can design, coordinate, implement and evaluate population health interventions that are designed to improve health and wellbeing through food and nutrition.
Nutritionists may also work in a variety of other occupations including research, as nutrition consultants in public health or in industry as nutrition communicators and food technologists.

Occupational therapy is a client-centred health profession concerned with promoting health and well-being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life.

Paramedicine

Being a paramedic is about a lot more than lights and sirens, and rushing to help someone in need. Paramedics perform clinical procedures, administer drugs, maintain patient records and decide on the most appropriate medical facility where someone should be taken.
Paramedics help people in non-life-threatening situations too, from sporting injuries to routine transport between hospitals and health services.

Pharmacists are healthcare professionals who practise in the field of health sciences focusing on safe and effective medication use. Pharmacists interpret and communicate specialised knowledge to patients, physicians, and other health care providers and are licensed to prepare and dispense medical drugs.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists are qualified health professionals who, in conjunction with other health professionals, assess, diagnose, treat and prevent a wide range of health conditions and movement disorders through physical methods such as massage, exercise and manipulation.

Psychology

A psychologist studies mental processes and human behaviour by observing, interpreting, and recording how people relate to one another and the environment. Some psychologists work independently, doing research or working only with patients or clients.

Radiography & Sonography

A Radiographer is an allied health professional who uses x-rays to produce radiographs of patients to help diagnose the patient’s medical condition.
A radiographer can have a lot of variety in their working day. As well as using x-rays to produce radiographs, they can take CT scans, ultrasounds and MRIs.

Research & Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are a type of research that studies new tests and treatments and evaluates their effects on human health outcomes.
People volunteer to take part in clinical trials to test medical interventions including drugs, cells and other biological products, surgical procedures, radiological procedures, devices, behavioural treatments and preventive care.

Sexual and reproductive health is linked to many other aspects of health, particularly mental health, and includes the right to respectful relationships, accurate information and access to timely health care and appropriate services.

The social work profession works in areas of human rights and social justice. Social workers work with individuals, families, groups and communities in the context of their physical, social and cultural environments, their past and current experiences, and their cultural and belief systems.

Speech Pathology

Speech Pathologists study, diagnose and treat communication disorders, including difficulties with speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering and using voice.
They work with children and people who have brain injuries, progressive neurological conditions or learning disabilities.
