Scope
This project has delivered a dynamic, functional, flexible and inspiring home for CSU Engineering at Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Bathurst. CSU Engineering is a new discipline that will be offered at CSU from 2016. The project transformed two existing buildings (buildings 1305 and 1306) to meet the functional and spatial needs of the school's new home. A new building and second storey (added to building 1305) was also constructed.
Design Features
CSU Engineering will focus on generating a unique engineering experience for graduates. Students will embrace an online curriculum and incorporate practical skills gained through teamwork activities carried out in collaborative learning zones, markers studios, workshops, project spaces and a gallery. There is also a Pitch Zone for students to work on and improve entrepreneurial skills.
Collaborative, interactive and functional spaces that enable improved engagement between staff and students feature throughout this project. Supporting this vision is an interior design that features an agile, honeycomb learning area, a changing gallery spaces equipped with electronic, interactive walls and open, interconnected, flexible lab spaces. All furniture will compliment the design and be easily reconfigured for space requirements.
The design is also sympathetic to the environment and view of the well-known Mount Panorama race circuit.
Sustainability Features
This project reused and redesigned two existing buildings on campus into a functional space. Energy efficient lighting and control systems were used throughout. Solar panels and solar/hybrid air-conditioning will assist with reduced energy consumption.
Energy will also be recovered through a mechanical heat exchange process. A dashboard of graphics will display energy use in the building.

As a result of this project staff from CSU's Division of Facilities Management have been relocated to buildings in the Department of Primary Industry centre off Research Station Drive. Building numbers 3016 and 3017.
CSU's fleet and mail services were also relocated to buildings 1309 and 1297 respectively.

Bathurst Engineering Building Productions
The CSU Engineering Building, located on the Bathurst Campus is a purpose built facility which is home to CSU Engineering. Bringing the building to life illustrated how a curriculum and associated learning environment could be designed in parallel. The building was constructed from humble beginnings, built on the existing site of the existing maintenance shed and storeroom on the CSU Bathurst Campus.
The CSU Engineering Building is an award winning building which was awarded a Commendation by the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) in 2016. In addition, Thomson Adsett have submitted this for the interior and AIA awards which will be presented to the AIA in Sydney during March 2017.
