About the Series:

Charles Sturt University's Explorations Series is part of the Community-University Partnership (CUP) program and aims to engage its rural and regional partners in matters of significance.

This Explorations Series talk will focus on fish deaths and water management in the Murray-Darling Basin. In January 2019, the Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources wrote to the Prime Minister requesting  an  independent  panel  be  established  to  assess  a series of large-scale fish  deaths  at Menindee in  2018-19  in the lower Darling.

The primary work of the panel was to identify causes, evaluate management responses and provide recommendations. Associate Professor Lee Baumgartner, from the Institute for Land, Water and Society, was a member of the scientific panel. He will be providing a public lecture which will focus on the work of the panel, its major findings and recommendations.

About the Speaker:

Dr Lee Baumgartner, Associate Research Professor in Fisheries and River Management at the Institute for Land, Water and Society at Charles Stuart University.

Dr Baumgartner has over 20 years of research expertise on fish passage, fish migration, flow ecology, invasive species, the impact of human disturbance on aquatic ecosystems and, more recently, the effectiveness of native fish stocking.
